"The 9 of us" |
It's crazy to think I have only been in
St Vincent for 4 days, and it has been so eventful so far!
I think the easiest thing will be to
give an overview of those days – are you ready?!
After a flight from Barbados to St
Vincent (which was in the smallest little plane powered by
propellers) we decided to explore the surroundings the following day.
To my surprise the island turned out to
be not flat at all, but a one big volcanic jungle with lots of hills
and mountains. Absolutely beautiful! Apparently it's one of the most
'true carribean' islands with its nature still not completely
discovered by the tourists, with an active volcano in the middle of
it, and some white and black sanded beaches. If you still can't
imagine the place – this is where they filmed “The Pirates of the
Caribbean”.
So in the morning we arrived at the
most beautiful white sanded beach to be welcomed warmly by the
locals, especially a man called Stanley, who sold us 10 juicy mangoes
for roughly 2pounds. (10zł) Deal!
Unfortunately the mangoes weren't quite
enough to satisfy our food cravings so the (then) 5 of us ventured
out to the nearest village in search for some food. We got grilled
chicken and a local bear in a grill bar which seemed to be open just
for us!
Thanks to the knowledge and kindness of
the locals we also went to an amazing beach party the following day.
The complete 9 of us showed the locals how to hula hoop, human limbo
and more.. I should probably say that we were slightly powered by the
local rum – Sunset (84.5%alcohol!), local rum punches and the local
Caribbean happiness.
Seeing as I'm here on my medical
elective I should probably just say a few words about the hospital
I'm “working” at. Well.. So far myself and my friend Katie were
put on a community medicine rotation, which involves sitting in child
health and chronic diseases clinics. But so far we have been getting
away around midday.. and enjoying the island (and free wi-fi in KFC).
The town is buzzing with life, markets and happy people and seeing as
the local Carnival is soon approaching we're yet to experience more –
so far becoming more “Vincy/Vincentian” every day.
Over and out.
